1° ENTERED APPRENTICE

The Entered Apprentice Degree is a man's first step into Freemasonry, symbolizing spiritual birth and youth. The candidate is prepared, obligated at the Altar, and instructed in the Three Great Lights of Masonry: the Volume of Sacred Law, the Square, and the Compass. His working tools are the twenty-four inch gauge and the common gavel, teaching the wise division of time and the removal of vice. As an Entered Apprentice, a man's rights are limited, since he cannot yet vote or hold office, but he is charged to keep his obligations, study the degree's teachings, and work toward proficiency before advancing to the Fellowcraft Degree.
